Pagoda
We live while facing death
When we met
The seeds of separation were already planted
On the bench
Outside the Cathedral
Sat you, the polytheist , and I, the pantheist
For tomorrow’s farewell
Let me cut my long black hair for you
I bid you to promise
If you die first
leave me your Buddha’s relics, the pearls
If I die first
Build me a white pagoda
On the plateau of snow and white cloud
Where no one knows me
When you chant your prayers and circumambulate my white pagoda
Perhaps
You will remember
Many years ago
Outside a remote cathedral
I cut my long black hair
For you to take to the land of snow

Beneath the wings of Bodala
I met you
My first night in Tibet
I dwelt in the Holy city
Beneath the wings of Bodala
You suntanned beaming face
Summoned me to the southwest of Lhasa
That day, I went to Shigatse,
Not for praying to gods, but to look for your traces
That afternoon, shuttling in the deep alleys of the monastery,
Only to look for your red kasaya
That journey, I shed many tears,
Only because the time I stayed with you was too short
My first night in Tibet
I met you
My wistful face will haunt you
All of my lonely nights beneath the wings of Bodala
Jack
Jack,
With sweetness,Jack
With calmness,Jack
Jack
Jack,
Jack

Jack, you come from another star
Jack, you come from another planet
We met in your home star
We united on the earth, my hometown,
But this planet is not your home
Jack, we will separate one day
On the street of a city
With sweetness, Jack you wait for me
With calmness, Jack you separate with me
Jack you don’t really understand the earth
But Jack, you have driven off my despair
With your commandments, with your compassion
The violent alien from your planet
Almost violated me and strangled me
Jack, you are my angel, you protected me
With your renunciation, compassion and commandment
After many years
Jack you will be back to your home
When I look back
On the street of a city
I will still see you waiting for me
Smiling, calmly, with sweetness
Kasaya

Beads
Before I burn off and burn into a handful of ashes
You are back
In the faint noise of the city
You give me a string of white beads
Like the holy relics of Buddha’s pearls
These holy beads scattered on my bosom
Yearnings haunting my heart like the rain at night dissolve
Anxieties holding me powerless in darkness clear off
In the scent of a café
You give me a string of holy beads
We walk on the street in deep winter
The holy beads adorn my deep red scarf evoking lama’s kasaya
With tranquility and serenity arising in my heart like Lhasa’s first snow
I look into your eyes
And see you off

I’m coming to you with a pair of scissors
I’m coming to you with a pair of scissors
Because that you are leaving
I will cut off a strand of hair for you
We might never meet again
I will meet you
outside the century-old imperial palace
Light was the snow last night
Which has soon passed into legend
I’m coming to you through the snowless winter
Bathed and perfumed
I am coming to you
Though there won’t be handshake or Buddhist top-touch
Catching fire, my hair will turn to ashes
What can I give you?
My face will wither before your freedom is won
Let me leave you my poems
My lyrics have touched many hearts
We will meet outside the century-old imperial palace
Wandering through the old alleys
And sauntering amid the lanes
Then we part, you will be back to your bastille
You are an invisible alien being
To see me in the day, you appear,
To hear me at night, you log on
But that is a hazard for you every time
I will cross the snowless city to see you
I have climbed the insurmountable altitudes to meet you
You are going, further away from me
Your moon will be water clear
My moon will be a copper coin
You will walk ahead of me amid lanes and debris
Outside the imperial palace
You once said, it was like the countryside
You walk fast, I lag behind
I hand you my hair just cut off
All our time together
Is shorter than the life of an ephemera
I look into your eyes when parting
You let me destroy and burn my poems for you
Because you must be invisible
Because your faith renounces passion and attachment
But my poems to you are already circulated
We part and we say goodbye

Your Happiness
Your happiness
Is to drive off my melancholia
You asked me to wipe off my saving of your voice
You said you would tally more for me when the time comes
You said good night
Promising you would tell me more stories tomorrow
You made me believe
You would take me to many places
You smiled
Innocently
I forget you don’t have freedom
I forget sadness—my inborn shadow and curse
Every night
I read you poetry
I fear
My reading would tempt you
Like the Siren’s songs
You are Homer’s Odysseus,
You can’t follow your heart
Bound to the mast of your faith
Only by renouncing my songs
Only by renouncing your pleasure and desire
Can you have your spiritual ascetic practice
Can you reach the shore of Pure Land
For you
I don’t fear aphonia and aphasia
For you
I don’t fear the ultimate silence
